Training for individuals

If you are an individual looking for training then we offer regular open courses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Check our open course schedule to find out when and where these are running. Open courses are also ideal for organisations who have a number of people to train but can't manage to have them all away from base at the same time, or if you want to try the course out before a roll-out across the organisation.

Many of our participants also enjoy the opportunity to work with people from other backgrounds, roles and organisations. We only accept up to three people from each organisation onto each open course, to ensure that a rich mix of people is represented.

Open courses run from early Tuesday morning through until Thursday afternoon. They are intensive, practical and fun. We take a maximum of 12 participants so that the 6:1 participant to tutor ratio provides for plenty of personal feedback, and participants will spend 80% of their time in practical activities.

The 2010 open course fee is $4,130 plus GST. Click here to book now

In-house training tailored to your organisation

With our in-house training, we work with you to select the most appropriate dates for courses, find an appropriate venue (which can be on or off site, subject to suitability) and we tailor programmes for you focused around your organisation's key negotiating issues and goals. We endeavour to get to know your business beforehand so that the skills coaching on the program is directed towards your group's key challenges, and where applicable relates to their terminology and systems.

The program is delivered by two Scotwork consultants for up to 12 participants, so there is a 6:1 participant to tutor ratio. The timetable is intensive and fast-paced, and runs across two and a half days.

As well as providing intensive and practical negotiating skills development and an impactful change to behaviour for the group, this format provides a great team-building opportunity. If you wish we can work with you to deliver a residential (live-in) program which gives your team even more time to discuss negotiating issues with our consultants after hours in a relaxed setting.

The 2010 in-house course fee is $38,148 plus GST and expenses at cost.

What will you learn on the Scotwork Course?

The course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to manage all types of negotiations, no matter how complex, in a professional, ethical, and competent manner, and to drive better deals for their organisations in situations where long term relationships are important. The course allows participants to:

  • Understand the structure underlying all negotiations
  • Identify the appropriate skills used for negotiations
  • Practise these skills in a constructive learning environment
  • Deliver a measurable improvement in performance

The negotiating process is at the heart of our lives. Few people get 100% of what they want all of the time. To get what we want we need the co-operation of others whose agendas, objectives and values may be different to ours. Intra- and inter-company, domestic and international relationships all involve negotiating workable solutions. Without negotiation, deadlock, lost orders, business failures, strikes and even wars can result.

Scotwork puts the skills into negotiation training. Our course will teach you the 8 step guide to negotiation, build your confidence and make negotiating a more satisfying experience.

Specifically you will learn how to:

  • recognise negotiating opportunities and make the most of them
  • recognise when negotiation is the best way of resolving conflicts of interest and what the alternatives are
  • recognise and manage the negotiation process itself
  • speed up or slow down that process
  • prepare for negotiations
  • improve the quality of the argument or discussion
  • improve your listening skills
  • pick up, interpret and act on signals
  • make proposals, suggestions or demands and where and when to pitch them
  • respond to theirs
  • minimise rejection of proposals
  • make and respond to complaints
  • manage multi pointed claims
  • repackage deals without it costing you any more
  • value and time your concessions
  • trade and bargain and put a price on demands
  • recognise closing opportunities and use them
  • handle agreement and implementation
  • use and defuse aggression and confrontation
  • handle deadlock
  • create win/win deals
  • use and respond to the common negotiating tactics
  • use adjournments and other time-outs
  • build ‘partnership relationships’ with clients, suppliers, employees or anyone you deal with
